One of the peculiar descriptions which the Christian religion received was that of good news: “The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son  of God” (Mark 1:1). The reason the Christian message was labeled gospel or good news is because Christians made some fundamental claims about the world which have no parallel in any other religion: That the world left on its own resources is lost and doomed to destruction and therefore every human being is in need of salvation which can only be obtained through Jesus Christ. Because the Christian faith was the only way to be saved, it was designated good news and it was the responsibility of every Christian to share it with everyone in the world regardless whether others had any religion or not or what kind of religion they practiced.

One of the strange ways in which Jesus described his teachings and mission is found in Matthew 9:17: “Neither is new wine put into old wineskins; otherwise, the skins burst, and the wine is spilled, and the skins are destroyed; but new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved." By these images of “wine” and “wineskins” Jesus referred to our system of beliefs and ways of thinking. Contrary to what we would like to think, our thinking is not fixed but rather changes not only over centuries but even within our life time. With this statement Jesus claimed that Christianity was not intended to be another version of the popular beliefs and ways of thinking of his time but one so radical that popular mentality had to be discarded in order to receive the new religion.

Una dintre dintre denumirile sub care credinţa creştina a ajuns să fie cunoscută este aceea de veste bună sau evanghelie: “Începutul Evangheliei lui Isus Hristos, Fiul lui Dumnezeu” (Marcu 1:1). Motivul pentru care solia creştină a fost numita evanghelie sau veste bună este deoarece creştinii au convingeri despre lume ce sunt fără echivalent în alte religii: Că lumea, dacă este lăsată pe propriile ei resurse este pierdută şi condamnată pieirii şi ca atare omenirea are nevoie de salvare sau mîntuire ce poate fi obţinută numai prin Isus Hristos. Întrucît credinţa creştină este singura cale de mîntuire, a fost denumită vestea cea bună si ca atare fiecare creştin are răspunderea să o împărtăsească altora indiferent dacă alţii au vreo religie sau nu sau ce fel de religie au.

Christianity was perceived by the early Christians as an empowering experience that endowed them with special abilities which they did not have before and which are referred to as "spiritual gifts." One of the passages in which Paul mentions them with great appreciation is 1 Corinthians 1:4-7:

"I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every king -- just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you -- so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ."

While some gifts were of practical value such as healing, others involved intellectual achievements such speaking in public both in the native tongue as well as in foreign languages.

Creştinismul a fost perceput de primii creştini ca fiind o experienţă ce îi înzestra cu capacitaţi pe care nu le avusesera mai înainte şi care sînt numite “daruri spirituale.” Unul dintre pasajele în care Pavel le menţionează cu mare satisfacţie este 1 Corinteni 1:4-7:

“Mulţumesc Dumnezeului meu totdeauna, cu privire la voi, pentru harul lui Dumnezeu, care v-a fost dat în Isus Hristos. Căci în El aţi fost îmbogăţiţi în toate privinţele, cu orice vorbire şi cu orice cunoştinţă. În felul acesta mărturia despre Hristos a fost bine întărită în mijlocul vostru; aşa că nu duceţi lipsă de nici un fel de dar, în aşteptarea arătării Domnului nostru Isus Hristos.”

Isus foloseste un limbaj ciudat pentru a descrie învataturile si misiunea lui în Matei 9:17: “Nici nu pun oamenii vin nou în burdufuri vechi; altfel, burdufurile pleznesc, vinul se varsă, şi burdufurile se prăpădesc; ci vinul nou îl pun în burdufuri noi, şi se păstrează amândouă." Prin imaginile de “vin” si “burdufuri” Isus s-a referit la sistemul nostru de convingeri si moduri de a gindi. Contrar cu ceea ce ne place nouă sa credem, modul nostru de a gindi nu este fix ci mai degrabă se schimba nu numai de-a lungul secolelor, dar chiar si pe parcursul vietii. Prin declaratia de mai sus Isus pretinde ca noua credinta pe care o propovaduia el nu urma sa fie înca o variantă a convingerilor populare din timpul lui, ci una atit de radicală încit mentalitatile populare la moda atunci trebuia să fie abandonate pentru a primi noua religie.
