Some years ago I read a story about the efforts made to save a species of large birds of pry from extinction. There were only several pairs of breeding birds left and they would lay only one egg at a time. One pair of birds were hatching their egg while a group of bird watchers with cameras were monitoring the birds all the time to make sure that nothing happened to the egg so that the baby chick would be born and boost the hope of survival for the whole species. At one point, the two adult birds started to fight and as they squabbled, they forgot about the egg and were pushing it closer and closer to the edge of the nest. The watching crowd looked helplessly as one bird knocked the egg over the edge and saw with horror as the egg crashed against the rocks bellow, dashing another hope for the survival of those birds.

Cu ani în urmă am citit o relatare despre eforturile de a salva o specie de mari pasări de pradă. Rămăseseră în viată numai cîteva perechi de păsări capabile să se reproducă si ele nu depuneau decît un singur ou pe sezon. O astfel de pereche de păsări cloceau singurul lor ou în timp ce un grup de spectatori monitorizau păsările cu aparate de filmat tot timpul pentru ca nimic sa nu le perturbe asa încît puiul să se poată naşte şi să ofere o nouă speranţă pentru supravieţuirea speciei. La un moment dat cele doua păsări au început sa se bată şi în timpul luptei, au uitat de ou şi au inceput să-l împingă încet-încet către margine cuibului. Grupul de observatori priveau neputincioşi cum una dintre păsări a lovit oul şi l-a rostogloit afară din cuib care, spre groaza tuturor, s-a sfărîmat de stîncile de dedesupt, zdrobind înca o speranţă de a salva specia.

La un moment dat unul dintre ucenici a avut idea să-l roage pe Isus să-i înveţe să se roage. Ca raspuns la această cerere, Isus a oferit ceea ce mulţi creştini considera ca este un model de rugăciune şi care este pentru unii singurul pasaj din Biblie pe care-lcunosc cît de cît. Printre exemplele de cereri pe care noi ar trebui să le includem în rugaciuni, Isus l-a menţionat şi pe acesta: “şi ne iartă nouă greşelile noastre, precum şi noi iertăm greşiţilor noştri” (Matei 6:12). Dacă Rugăciunea Domnească este cea mai cunoscută parte din Biblie, această frază din rugăciune este cea mai apreciată deoarece ne spune că Dumnezeu este un Dumnezeu iertător care doreşte ca noi oamenii să învăţăm să iertăm tot aşa cum şi Dumnezeu iartă tot timpul pe oricine fară nici o restricţie sau discriminare. Dacă am putea să-i determinăm pe oameni să fie la fel de iertători după cum este Dumnezeu, am trăi într-o lume în care nimeni nu ar mai nutri nici un resentiment împotriva cuiva şi ca atare am trăi în cea mai fericită lume care nu ar fi umbrită niciodată nici de cel mai mic sentiment negativ.

One day one of the disciples had the idea to ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. As an answer to this request, Jesus offered what is considered a model prayer which many Christians know by heart and which is the only part of the Bible that some Christians know at all. Among the examples of requests that we should make when praying to God, Jesus mentioned the following: “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us” (Matt 6:12). If the Lord’s Prayer is the best known part of the Bible, this line of the prayer is no doubt the most appreciated because it tells us that God is a forgiving God and he wants us humans to learn to forgive just as God is forgiving all the time and everyone without any discrimination. If we could make humans as forgiving as God does, we would live in a world in which no one would hold anything against anyone else and we would live in the happiest world never clouded with the slightest negative feeling. Who cannot not understand such a simple truth and request?

While most religions have the purpose of preserving the system of beliefs, laws, customs, and ways of life which people have inherited, Christianity claimed from the beginning that life and the world as we know it is bankrupt and its purpose is precisely to radically change it in order to save it from the impending doom. This change in the world was going to occur not just after Jesus’ coming, but even in preparation for his coming, as John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus, proclaimed: “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord’” (John 1:23).

    When it comes to roads, no one would argue that crooked roads are undesirable and straight ones are preferable. Whether roads change direction because they have to go up or down in order to cross deep valleys or high mountains, or have to go around in order to avoid bodies of water or other natural obstacles, crooked ways are always longer and harder to travel on. Because such roads change direction all the time, it makes it difficult to know where you are all the time, which direction you are going, or whether you are lost or are still on the right path. Moreover, on such roads is hard to anticipate what lies ahead and be prepared for what is coming next.  By contrast, straight roads eliminate all worries and promise an easy travel and safe arrival at the destination.

În timp ce cele mai multe religii au drept scop protejarea si conservarea sistemului de convingeri, legi, obiceiuri, şi feluri de viaţă pe care oamenii le-au moştenit, Creştinismul a sustinut încă de la început că lumea aşa cum o cunoaştem noi este falimentară iar scopul noii religii este tocmai de a o schimba in mod radical pentru a o salva de la o soartă sumbră. Această schimbare in omenirea trebuia sa aibă loc nu doar dupa venirea lui Isus, ci chiar ca o pregătire pentru venirea lui, aşa cum a proclamat Ioan Botezătorul, înaintemergătorul lui Isus: “‘Eu’, a zis el, ‘sunt glasul celui ce strigă în pustie: "Neteziţi calea Domnului” (Ioan 1:23).

    Cînd este vorba de drumuri, nimeni nu poate susţine ca drumurile drepte sunt nedorite iar cele drepte sunt de preferat. Dacă drumurile trebuie să schimbe direcţia doarece trebuie să urce sau să coboare pentru a traversa văi adînci sau munţi înalţi, sau trebuie sa ocolească mase de apă sau alte obstacole naturale, călătoria pe drumurile întortocheate durează mai mult şi este mai dificilă. Deoarece astfel de drumuri îşi schimbă direcţia încontinuu, este dificil să ştii unde te aflii la diferite momente, care este direcţia în care mergi, sau dacă te-ai rătăcit sau înca eşti pe drumul cel bun. Mai mult, pe astfel de drumuri este dificil să anticipezi ce se află în faţă şi să fii pregătit pentru ce urmează. Prin contrast, drumurile drepte elimină toate îngrijorările si promit o călătorie uşoară si o ajungere în siguranţă la destinaţie.
