Avraam este fară îndoilă personajul central în islamism, iudaism, şi creştinism iar Pavel afirmă că ceea ce face ca Avraam să fie atit de deosebit este credinţa lui: “De aceea moştenitori sunt cei ce se fac prin credinţă, pentru ca să fie prin har, şi pentru ca făgăduinţa să fie chezăşuită pentru toată sămânţa lui Avraam: nu numai pentru sămânţa aceea care este sub Lege, ci şi pentru sămânţa aceea care are credinţa lui Avraam, tatăl nostru al tuturor, după cum este scris: ‘Te-am rânduit să fii tatăl multor neamuri’” (Evrei 4:16-17).

Prin imaginea vinului nou care sparge burdufurile vechi Isus a arătat clar ca el oferă un mod de a gîndi care era incompatibil cu modul popular de a gindi din timpul lui. Probabil că unul dintre cele mai izbitoare exemple este declaraţia lui din Matei 5:39: “Dar Eu vă spun: Să nu vă împotriviţi celui ce vă face rău. Ci, oricui te loveşte peste obrazul drept, întoarce-i şi pe celălalt.” În mod surprinzător, acest pasaj este cel mai îndrăgit de cei ce urăsc creştinismul şi probabil este singurul lucru din creştinism care le place cu adevărat; nu pentru ei înşişi, ci pentru creştini. Sunt unii cărora le place să supună pe creştini la tot felul de abuzuri dupa care tot ei li se adresează rîzîndu-le în nas: “Cum, nu mă iubeşti? Isus al tău are să te tragă de urechi!” Chiar conducători religioşi creştini spun soţiilor care se pling că sunt bătute de bărbaţii lor să se supună bătăilor deoarece asta este ceea ce Isus le cere.

Through the image of new wine which destroys the old wine skins Jesus indicated that he realized that he advocated a way of thinking which was incompatible with the popular thinking of his time. Probably one of the most striking examples is Matthew 5:39: “But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also.” Surprisingly, this statement has become very much loved by Christianity haters and is probably the only thing in Christianity that non-Christians really like; not for themselves, but for Christians. There are those who love to pile abuses on Christians and then turn around and add with a grin: “Don’t you love me? Your Jesus is going to spank you!” Even Christian spiritual leaders tell wives which are abused by their husbands to submit to the abuses because that’s that Jesus said.

“Ucenicilor le-a fost necaz, când au văzut lucrul acesta, şi au zis: ‘Ce rost are risipa aceasta? Mirul acesta s-ar fi putut vinde foarte scump, şi banii să se dea săracilor.’ Când a auzit Isus, le-a zis: ‘De ce faceţi supărare femeii? Ea a făcut un lucru frumos faţă de Mine. Pentru că pe săraci îi aveţi totdeauna cu voi, dar pe Mine nu Mă aveţi totdeauna’”( Matei 26:8-11).

Va vine să credeţi că Isus a putut să spună aşa ceva? El preferă ca picioarele lui să-i fie scăldate în parfum scump în loc ca nişte guri flămînde să fie săturate cu banii cheltuiţi pe acel parfum. Cel care a spus tînărului bogat să vîndă tot ce are ca să dea la săraci nu ar renunţa la plădecrea ca picioarele să-i miroase a parfum pentru aceiaşi săraci. Cel care a ales ca să se nască sărac pentru ca să înţeleagă pe săraci crede că săracii nu trebuie să dispară din lume. Cel care a venit să ne înveţe despre Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu în care nu mai există nici o problemă,  cred de fapt ca sărăcia nu va dispărea niciodată.

But when the disciples saw [that a woman anointed Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume], they were angry and said,  "Why this waste? For this ointment could have been sold for a large sum,  and the money given to the poor." But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you trouble  the woman? She has performed a good service for me. For you always have the poor with you, but you will not  always have me (Matthew 26:8-11).

    Can you believe Jesus said this? He would prefer his feet to be soaked in expensive perfume rather than see some hungry mouths being fed with the money spent on that perfume. The one who told the young rich man to sell everything he had to give it to the poor, would not give up the pleasure of his feet smelling perfume for the same poor. The one who chose to be born poor in order to prove that he understands the poor thinks that the poor are in this world to stay. The one who came to teach us about the Kingdom of God in which there would be no problem, actually believed that poverty will never disappear.
