After arriving in the promised land Abraham decided to separate from his nephew Lot in order to avoid conflict and Lot chose to live in Sodom, the best area of the country. Abraham had already saved Lot and the city from a conquering army and then pleaded with two divine messengers to spare the city if just a few innocent inhabitants would be found in the city. This time Abraham failed to saved the city: “Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the LORD out of heaven; and he overthrew those cities, and all the Plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground” (Gen 19:24-25).

După ce a junst în ţara făgăduită Avraam a decis să se separe de Lot pentru a evita conflictele, moment cînd Lot a ales să locuiască în Sodoma, cel mai îmbelşugat loc din ţară. Avraam deja salvase pe Lot şi cetatea din mîinile unei armate cotropitoare şi a pledat pentru cetate cu cei doi mesageri divini care veniseră să o distrugă pentru a o salva în speranţa că în ea se va găsi un număr mic de locuitori nevinovaţi. Spre dezamăgirea lui, această intervenţie nu a mai reuşit să salveze cetatea: “Atunci Domnul a făcut să ploaie peste Sodoma şi peste Gomora pucioasă şi foc de la Domnul din cer. A nimicit cu desăvârşire cetăţile acelea, toată Câmpia şi pe toţi locuitorii cetăţilor, şi tot ce creştea pe pământ” (Geneza 19;24-25).

Nu ştiu ce a gindit Lot după ce Avraam i-a dat ocazia sa aleagă cel mai bun lot de pamînt, apoi şi-a riscat viaţa ca să-l elibereze pe el si cetăţenii Sodomei dupa cea au fost luaţi prizonieri, şi în final nu a acceptat nici măcar să primească o recompesă din pradă. Probabil s-a felicitat ca el este deştept şi ştie să-şi urmărească interesele şi a mulţumit lui Dumnezeu că există în lume şi oameni fraieri ca Avraam cărora le pasă mai mult de alţii decît de ei înşişi. Dupa el, Avrram ştia să piardă iar el să cîştige.

We do not know what Lot thought after Abraham gave him the option to choose the best piece of land in Canaan, then was taken prisoner, Abraham came to rescue him and the city of Sodom where he had chosen to live, and even refused to accept any spoil from those rescued as payment for his dangerous enterprise. Probably he congratulated himself for being smart enough to pursue his own interests and thanked God that there were people like Abraham in the world who were naive enough to care more about others than about themselves. According to him, he was a winner and Abraham was a looser.

I do not claim to know why people a born where they are or whether God has anything to do with such decisions, but apparently Abraham was born in the wrong place because God asked him to leave the prosperous city of Ur where he grew up because the piece of land which God had assigned to him was somewhere else. Because Abraham did not want to live in the wrong place, he decided to go to the piece of land or the “lot” which had been assigned to him only to discover that his “lot” was already occupied: “Now Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents, so that the land could not support both of them living together; for their possessions were so great that they could not live together, and there was strife between the herders of Abram's livestock and the herders of Lot's livestock. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites lived in the land. Then Abram said to Lot, ‘Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herders and my herders; for we are kindred. Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.’ Lot looked about him, and saw that the plain of the Jordan was well watered everywhere like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar; this was before the LORD had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. So Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward; thus they separated from each other” (Genesis 13:5-11).

Nu pretind ca ştiu de ce oamenii se nasc într-un anumit loc şi nu în altul sau dacă Dumnezeu are de a face cu astfel de decizii, dar se pare ca Avraam nu s-a născut unde trebuia deoarece Dumnezeu i-a cerut sa părăseasca cetatea îmbelşugată Ur în care crescuse deoarece îi stabilise un alt loc de reşedinţă în altă parte. Întrucit el nu a dorit sa trăiască acolo unde nu era locul lui, Avraam s-a hotărît să mergă să-şi ia în primire lotul de pămînt pe care i-l stabilise Dumnezeu numai ca să constate că lotul respectiv era deja ocupat: “Lot, care călătorea împreună cu Avram, avea şi el oi, boi şi corturi. Şi ţinutul acela nu-i încăpea să locuiască împreună; căci averile lor erau aşa de mari, încât nu puteau să locuiască împreună. S-a iscat o ceartă între păzitorii vitelor lui Avram şi păzitorii vitelor lui Lot. Canaaniţii şi Feresiţii locuiau atunci în ţară. Avram a zis lui Lot: ‘Te rog, să nu fie ceartă între mine şi tine, şi între păzitorii mei şi păzitorii tăi, căci suntem fraţi. Nu-i oare toată ţara înaintea ta? Mai bine desparte-te de mine: dacă apuci tu la stânga, eu voi apuca la dreapta; dacă apuci tu la dreapta, eu voi apuca la stânga.’ Lot şi-a ridicat ochii, şi a văzut că toată Câmpia Iordanului era bine udată în întregime. Înainte de a nimici Domnul Sodoma şi Gomora, până la Ţoar, era ca o grădină a Domnului, ca ţara Egiptului. Lot şi-a ales toată Câmpia Iordanului, şi a mers spre răsărit” (Geneza 13:5-11).
